Mojtaba Khamenei names 2 generals to lead Iran military, IRGC
Ali Abdollahi will head the armed forces staff, while Ahmad Vahidi is elevated to IRGC commander amid a wider security shake-up.
Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has named two new generals to lead the military and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Ali Abdollahi was appointed chief of staff of the armed forces, while Ahmad Vahidi became IRGC commander with the rank of major general, according to a statement on an official website cited by AFP and other media on Monday. Abdollahi previously led Khatam al-Anbiya, Iran's joint operational command. At the same time, President Masoud Pezeshkian also appointed Mohsen Rezaei as head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, replacing Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, who stepped down. The series of rotations marks a reshuffle at the top of Iran's security apparatus amid still-high regional tensions.
