Modi pressed Putin to end Ukraine war as US weighs oil tariffs

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine and halt hostilities during talks at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Bishkek on Monday. Modi said India backs peace efforts and called for a move from what he described as endless war to an end to fighting. The appeal came as Russia's Defense Ministry said it was planning massive strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, raising fears of another winter assault. It also came ahead of expected action in the US House on a bill backed by Lindsey Graham that would impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries among the top five buyers of Russian oil or gas, including India and China.
