MLS fines Lionel Messi after slap in 2-2 draw

New: MLS also fined Ian Fray, while Cavan Sullivan’s red card and one-match suspension were overturned after review.

Major League Soccer fined Lionel Messi after the Inter Miami star slapped the back of Quinn Sullivan’s head in a 2-2 draw with the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday night local time at Subaru Park. The amount was not disclosed. MLS also disciplined Inter Miami defender Ian Fray for grabbing Sullivan by the neck in a separate incident in second-half stoppage time. The match ended tensely with red cards for Yannick Bright and Cavan Sullivan. But after review by the Independent Review Panel, Cavan Sullivan’s red card and one-match suspension were overturned. In the midst of the incident, Messi still scored one goal and added one assist for Inter Miami.
