Mississippi Senate race stayed unresolved with ballots still out
What's next: Mail ballots can arrive through Nov. 10, and counties have until Nov. 13 to certify results in a state with no recount process.
Mississippi's U.S. Senate race remained too close to call Wednesday, with Democrat Scott Colom holding a narrow lead over incumbent Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith as mail and provisional ballots were still being counted. ABC reported Colom led by 1,138 votes with 96% of the expected vote in, while NPR earlier put the margin at 43 votes. State officials said about 3,600 mail ballots could still arrive by Nov. 10 if postmarked by Election Day, and an unknown number of affidavit ballots also remain to be processed before the Nov. 13 certification deadline. Mississippi has no formal recount mechanism, though candidates can inspect ballot materials and pursue a legal challenge after certification.
