Mississippi clears officer in shooting that killed 1-year-old boy

What's new: The ruling came before authorities released body-camera or parking lot video, drawing renewed demands from the family.

Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch found that a Senatobia police officer was justified in firing at a car during a June shoplifting response at a Walmart, a shot that killed 1-year-old Kohen Wiley and critically wounded driver Latoya Ferrell. Investigators said the vehicle drove toward officers as they tried to stop it. Kohen's mother, Vellesiya Wiley, has disputed that account and said neither she nor Ferrell stole diapers or baby clothes. Court records cited by the reports show neither woman has been charged. Civil rights lawyer Benjamin Crump, who represents the family, criticized the finding and again called for the release of body-camera and parking lot footage. The shooting triggered protests in Senatobia, about 40 miles south of Memphis.
