Missed update caused 9.5-hour outage at Singapore public hospitals

Why it matters: About 4,000 outpatient visits were rescheduled, though officials found no cyberattack or patient data breach.

A missed security update to a shared domain name system caused a 9.5-hour IT outage across Singapore’s three public healthcare clusters on Oct. 13, disrupting appointment bookings, visitor registration, medication dispensing and billing. Senior Minister of State for Health Tan Kiat How told Parliament the lapse by a contracted service provider was preventable. About 4,000 outpatient appointments were rescheduled, and some patients faced delays of up to two hours. The outage hit NHG Health, the National University Health System and SingHealth. Tan said the incident was not a cyberattack and that no patient data was compromised or lost. He said Synapxe is reviewing the provider’s obligations and will tighten monitoring, backup arrangements and checks on critical system changes.
