Severe storms sweeping across the Midwest killed a 54-year-old man in Des Moines, knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of customers, damaged buildings and disrupted flights, as forecasters warned of more dangerous weather into Thursday night. The National Weather Service logged more than a dozen tornado reports Wednesday across northern Missouri, Iowa, Kansas and Illinois. Tornado watches or warnings stayed in effect Thursday in parts of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri and Wisconsin. Flights were delayed or stopped in cities including Chicago, Philadelphia and Newark. In Springfield, Illinois, two buildings at the Animal Protective League shelter were heavily damaged, though none of the nearly 150 cats and 28 dogs inside were hurt.
