Michigan reports 2 first US deaths in Cyclospora outbreak

Two people in Michigan have died in the largest US outbreak of cyclosporiasis, the first reported fatalities tied to the intestinal illness. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said both people had significant underlying health conditions that may have been worsened by cyclosporiasis and dehydration. Michigan reported 11,234 outbreak-linked cases on Monday, up 461 from Friday, along with 193 hospitalizations. Wayne County has logged the most infections, and adults ages 30 to 39 have been hit hardest, state data showed. Federal investigators have tied the nine-state outbreak to iceberg lettuce sourced from Taylor Farms operations in central Mexico, though officials are still investigating other possible sources. The CDC has recorded 6,707 lab-confirmed US cases as of July 28, with more than 11,500 additional suspected cases awaiting review.
