Michigan Democrats vote in high-stakes Senate primary on Aug. 4
Why it matters: The winner faces Republican Mike Rogers in a must-hold seat for Democrats' Senate hopes.
Michigan Democrats are voting Tuesday in a closely watched Senate primary that has become a test of the party's direction in a battleground state. The contest pits Rep. Haley Stevens, a four-term congresswoman backed by Gretchen Whitmer, Gary Peters and Chuck Schumer, against Abdul El-Sayed, a former public health official endorsed by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Their fight has highlighted Democratic splits over ideology, electability and U.S. policy toward Israel. More than 1 million voters cast ballots early, mostly by mail. The nominee will face Republican Mike Rogers in November for an open seat Democrats see as critical to any path back to a Senate majority.
