Michigan Democrats make final push in high-stakes Senate primary

Michigan Democrats Abdul El-Sayed and Haley Stevens spent the final weekend before Tuesday’s Senate primary chasing key blocs in the Detroit area, underscoring how tightly contested the race has become. El-Sayed, a progressive backed by Bernie Sanders, campaigned at three Black churches and argued for economic opportunity and equal rights. Stevens, a four-term U.S. representative backed by Chuck Schumer and many of the state’s top Democrats, made stops at a Black church and a union hall as she pressed her case on experience and electability. The primary is drawing national attention as a test of the party’s direction, and the nominee will need to reunite Democrats for the November race to hold the open seat.
