Meta weighs settlement in teen safety case that could cost $18 billion

Meta Platforms and a bipartisan group of 29 state attorneys general have held settlement talks as a federal trial in Oakland over teen safety on Facebook and Instagram moves into its second week. The states accuse Meta of designing features that drive compulsive use by young people and of illegally collecting data from children under 13. Meta disputes the claims. BBC reported a settlement could reach $18 billion over 10 years, far below the company’s cited worst-case trial exposure of as much as $1.4 trillion. Proposed changes for teen accounts include a default two-hour daily limit across both apps, muted notifications from midnight to 6 a.m. and on school days from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and hidden likes.
