Meta weighs midtrial deal in 29-state teen addiction case

What's new: A trial loss could bring penalties up to $1.4 trillion and force changes to Facebook and Instagram features.

Meta Platforms and attorneys general from 29 states have discussed a possible settlement while a closely watched trial over teen safety moves through federal court in Oakland, California. The states contend Meta built Facebook and Instagram features that drove compulsive use by young people and misled users about safety tools. They also accuse the company of collecting data from children under 13 in violation of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. Meta rejects the claims, but its own estimates put potential penalties at as much as $1.4 trillion if it loses. Jurors have already heard from Instagram chief Adam Mosseri, and lawyers have said Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is also expected to testify.
