Meta Platforms agreed to pay up to $16.7 billion to settle a landmark lawsuit brought by 29 US states over its social media platforms, according to a court filing in federal court in Oakland, California. The proposed agreement, which still needs a judge’s approval, would also force Meta to add new protections for younger users on Facebook and Instagram. Those measures include limiting how long youths can keep scrolling and blocking them from turning off certain safety settings without parental consent. The settlement came during the second week of a jury trial that had exposed Meta to large financial penalties and court-ordered changes to how its platforms operate.
