Meta releases Muse Glimmer, opens Spark 1.2 in AI push

Why it matters: Meta is betting cheaper on-device models and broader access can help U.S. developers compete with Chinese rivals.

Meta on Monday released Muse Glimmer, a lightweight open-weight AI model built for agentic tasks on a laptop or desktop, and said it will also publish the weights for its more advanced Muse Spark 1.2. CEO Mark Zuckerberg paired the launch with an essay urging the U.S. to lower barriers for open-source AI, arguing American developers need fewer restrictions on training data and infrastructure if they are to keep pace with Chinese competitors. Meta said Glimmer can run on a single graphics card, a cheaper alternative to cloud-based systems that rely on large data centers. Shares of Meta rose more than 2% in premarket trading as investors weighed the company’s AI strategy and heavy spending plans.
