Meta, Microsoft push data center lease commitments past $850 billion

Why it matters: The long-dated obligations signal years of spending on AI chips, power and server capacity across the industry.

Meta Platforms and Microsoft drove total future data center lease commitments at the biggest cloud companies to more than $850 billion, underscoring how aggressively the industry is building for artificial intelligence. Meta added $79 billion in new commitments in the latest quarter, lifting its total to $182.9 billion as of March 31, while Microsoft added more than $41 billion to reach $196.6 billion, a Bloomberg analysis of filings found. Oracle’s future-dated leases edged lower but it still leads in total commitments, while Amazon.com added $10 billion. The obligations, mostly tied to data centers and spread over roughly two decades, point to sustained demand for semiconductors, electricity and server-farm construction.
