Meta faces trial as 29 states target teen-addiction claims
What's at stake: Prosecutors want sweeping product changes and penalties that could reshape Facebook and Instagram.
Meta is set to face opening arguments Tuesday in federal court in Oakland, California, in a closely watched case brought by 29 state attorneys general over claims that Facebook and Instagram were built to keep children and teens hooked. The states allege Meta used features such as infinite scroll, recommendation algorithms and the like button to prolong use while misleading the public about harms to young users. They also contend the company collected data from children under 13 without parental consent, violating the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey are leading the trial, which follows a recent New Mexico loss for Meta and could bring major penalties and court-ordered changes to its platforms.
