Mentawai man goes on trial after reselling Starlink internet

West Sumatra officials are coordinating with Komdigi on licensing options that could factor into the defendant's case.

Yogi Gilang Arya Setia, 39, a resident of Sikakap, Mentawai Islands Regency, is on trial at the Padang District Court for reselling Starlink internet service without a permit. The case, numbered 450/Pid.sus/2026/Pn Pdg, has entered the evidentiary phase after the panel of judges rejected the defendant's challenge. The case began when Yogi installed a Starlink device at his parents' guesthouse in 2024, then expanded coverage because demand for internet in Sikakap was high. He later set up PT Mentawai Network Provider and distributed the service to residents and several institutions. Yogi was arrested and has been held since 8 July 2026. His lawyer, Romi Martianus, said the matter should be settled through administrative channels. Separately, Deputy Governor of West Sumatra Vasko Ruseimy said the West Sumatra provincial government is coordinating with the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs to find a way out on licensing.
