Mentan requires 11 sugar mills to have cane farms in Indonesia
Amran said only one of 11 refining firms had complied since 2014, while the rest were believed to still lack plantations.
Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman has required all sugar mills and importers of sugar made from imported raw materials to build their own sugar cane plantations in Indonesia to speed sugar self-sufficiency. He said the requirement is not a new rule, but has been set out in Agriculture Minister Regulation No. 98/2013 and reinforced by Article 43 of Plantation Law No. 39/2014. Under the rule, processing units using imported raw materials must have plantations no later than three years after starting commercial operations. According to Amran, of the 11 sugar refining companies operating, only one has complied since 2014. The government is also targeting sugar cane replanting through bongkar ratoon on 100.000 hectares this year and 150.000 hectares in 2027.
