Mentan speeds permits for dairy cattle farms in Brebes
The PT Global Dairi Bersama project is targeted to produce 180,000 tons of fresh milk a year, as imports still cover 80 percent of demand.
Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman promised faster licensing for investors building modern dairy cattle farms after the groundbreaking of the integrated PT Global Dairi Bersama project in Brebes, Central Java, on Monday. Amran said Indonesia needs about 20 similar large farms to push milk self-sufficiency. The Brebes project is targeted to produce 180,000 tons of fresh milk a year, equal to about 20 percent of current national milk output. According to Amran, Indonesia still imports about 3.6 million to 3.8 million tons of milk a year, or around 80 percent of national needs. He also said the dairy ecosystem needs to be strengthened by developing smallholder farmers, from about 50,000 now to at least 100,000 productive farmers.
