Mendiktisaintek urges campus labs to spawn global tech firms

Brian Yuliarto highlighted the “valley of death” in commercialization, where many research projects fail to reach the market.

Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto urged laboratories at Indonesian campuses and research institutions not to stop at publications or prototypes, but to produce technology companies that can compete in global markets. At the Indonesia Innovator Award 2026 in Jakarta on Monday (10/8), Brian said the toughest challenge lies in the downstream phase, when research results must be turned into commercial products and then grow into companies and industries. This stage is known as the “valley of death,” the point where many innovations fail to break into the market. He cited Taiwan as an example, where government research institutions gradually gave rise to semiconductor giants. Brian also said Kemdiktisaintek will strengthen collaboration with BRIN to advance deep tech industry in Indonesia.
