Minister urges Islamic boarding schools to train leaders, managers

The directive came during a pesantren directorate strengthening event in Krapyak, with KH Abdul Wahab Hasbullah held up as a model.

Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar urged Islamic boarding schools to produce not only charismatic leaders, but also institutional managers who are professional, adaptable and able to use technology. He delivered the message while opening a Strengthening of the Directorate General of Pesantren event through a book discussion on KH Abdul Wahab Hasbullah at Pondok Pesantren Ali Maksum Krapyak, Yogyakarta, on Thursday (4/6). According to Nasaruddin, efforts to strengthen the Directorate General of Pesantren must deepen the identity and scholarly traditions of pesantren, which differ from other educational institutions, so they remain relevant to public needs. He said KH Abdul Wahab Hasbullah offered an example of how strong leadership can go together with effective organizational management. Basnang Said, director of pesantren at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, said the event was part of efforts to strengthen the role of pesantren and revive the intellectual legacy of the nation's founding scholars.
