Medan village chief sanctioned after mocking resident on streetlights

Medan Inspectorate recommended a light disciplinary penalty, saying Syerly's remarks likely breached ASN ethics rules.

Syerly, the head of Paya Pasir village in Medan Marelan District, was given a disciplinary coaching sanction after a video of her mocking a resident who complained about public street lighting went viral on social media. The Medan City Inspectorate said Syerly strongly appeared to have violated ASN ethics rules and recommended a light disciplinary penalty under Medan Mayor Regulation No. 58 of 2023. The incident occurred when Medan Mayor Rico Tri Putra Bayu Waas inspected road repairs. A resident complained that Jalan Paya Pasir was dark and vulnerable to robberies, and said he had installed four light poles with his own money. Syerly was then heard interjecting, “Cie curhat dia,” while laughing. After being summoned by the Inspectorate, Syerly apologized and said her remark was spontaneous because she felt close to the resident.
