McConnell remains in rehab 6 weeks after fall, off Senate duty

Why it matters: The 84-year-old Kentucky senator is still not cleared to return, extending uncertainty around his role in Washington.

Sen. Mitch McConnell remains in a rehabilitation facility more than six weeks after a fall that hospitalized him, and doctors have not cleared him to return to Senate work. The Office of the Attending Physician said McConnell is undergoing multiple physical therapy sessions each day to rebuild strength and lower the risk of future falls. The office said his childhood polio remains a major factor in his mobility. McConnell, 84, said he is still working to resume his full schedule but will miss Saturday's Fancy Farm event in Kentucky. The Kentucky Republican, a former Senate majority leader, has faced repeated health scares in recent years and has said he will retire at the end of his term.
