Mamdani studies legal grounds to detain Netanyahu in New York

He has asked New York City’s Law Department to assess whether NYPD could detain Netanyahu during the UN General Assembly in September.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has sought a legal review of the possibility of arresting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he attends the U.N. General Assembly in New York in September. In The New York Times’ The Interview podcast, Mamdani said his administration is actively discussing the matter with the New York City Law Department to determine whether he has the authority to order the NYPD to detain the foreign leader. He said any step would be limited by the laws in force in the city. Mamdani also said Netanyahu should be tried in The Hague and referred to the International Criminal Court indictment. He raised the issue during his mayoral campaign. Netanyahu previously dismissed the threat in a Sid Rosenberg radio interview and accused Mamdani of supporting Hamas.
