Malaysia: Pilot carried 26 kg of drugs to Indonesia alone
Questioning in Jakarta has pointed to a possible syndicate network in Malaysia and Indonesia, though no KLIA staff collusion has been found.
Malaysian police have reached a provisional conclusion that the Malaysia Airlines pilot detained in Indonesia for smuggling drugs into Soekarno-Hatta Airport acted alone while passing security screening at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The finding came after four investigators from Malaysia's Narcotics Crime Investigation Department questioned the suspect in Jakarta on Aug. 12-13. NCID director Hussein Omar Khan said there is still no indication of inside help at KLIA, but investigators are still tracing how the suspect escaped detection. The questioning also uncovered a suspected wider drug syndicate network in Malaysia, Indonesia and other countries. The 39-year-old pilot, Mohd Saufi bin Othman, was arrested at Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta on July 28 after officers found 15 packages weighing 26 kilograms containing 70.114 ecstasy pills and methamphetamine in his suitcase.
