Malaysia durian glut slashes Musang King prices up to 90%

Why it matters: Singapore prices have fallen too, but sellers say transport, rent and tax will keep them well above Malaysia's lows.

A bumper durian harvest in Malaysia has sent prices for premium varieties tumbling, with Musang King dropping from about RM90 a kilogram to as low as RM9 in some reports. Traders and industry officials linked the slide to a flood of fruit during peak season and rejected export-grade stock, especially fruit that did not meet China's standards. The glut has drawn crowds to stalls in Kuala Lumpur and nearby areas, where some whole fruits sold for under RM25. In Singapore, durian prices have also eased, but sellers said the decline will be milder. The Straits Times reported Mao Shan Wang fell from about S$28 per kg in March to S$20 by June 23, with some merchants expecting a floor near S$18.
