Magnitude 7.1 quake hits Venezuela, prompts Caribbean tsunami alert

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck near Montalban, Venezuela, on Wednesday evening, shaking Caracas and parts of neighboring Colombia and prompting a tsunami advisory across parts of the Caribbean. The U.S. Geological Survey placed the quake's depth at about 13 kilometers and said the epicenter was roughly 130 miles east of the Venezuelan capital. Authorities reported injuries and damage in Caracas, where emergency crews responded to collapsed structures in Altamira and Palos Grandes. ABC News reported some airport damage and a suspension of flights. Tsunami alerts warned of hazardous waves for Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and nearby coasts within 300 kilometers of the epicenter, including islands off Venezuela.
