M5.9 quake shakes eastern Japan, injuring 37

Tokyo rail service was delayed, a major water pipe burst and residents were urged to watch for aftershocks for the next week.

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck eastern Japan on Sunday at about 02.00 local time, with its epicenter south of Ibaraki Prefecture at a depth of 68 kilometers. The shaking was felt as far as Tokyo and did not trigger a tsunami, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The Japan Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported at least 37 people suffered minor injuries, including a woman in her 80s in Yokohama who hurt her hip after falling from her bed. JR East train service in Tokyo was briefly disrupted, while a major water pipe burst in Koto District and is still being investigated for a possible link to the quake. Authorities also found no abnormalities at Tokai No. 2 nuclear power plant or the Fukushima Daiichi and Fukushima Daini facilities.
