A magnitude 5.8 earthquake shook waters off western Philippines on Friday, August 7, 2026, with tremors felt as far as Manila. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, or PHIVOLCS, said the epicenter was 21 kilometers southwest of Occidental Mindoro province at a depth of 10 kilometers. Witnesses told Reuters office buildings in the capital swayed and residents rushed outside in panic to get to safety. In one government agency building, employees were also told to evacuate as a precaution. PHIVOLCS said the quake was not expected to cause damage, but aftershocks could still occur. The Philippines is frequently hit by earthquakes because it lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of high tectonic and volcanic activity.
