Lululemon apologizes after Great Wall event draws drum backlash

What's new: The brand removed related promotional content after critics said a Japanese taiko drum was used in a China-themed performance.

Lululemon apologized after a promotional event at the Great Wall in late May triggered backlash in China over its use of a Japanese taiko drum during a performance meant to honor Chinese culture. The athleisure brand said on Weibo that the event had intended to pay tribute to Chinese culture but that its team failed to identify the risk of controversy early on. Chinese actor Zhu Yilong, a brand ambassador, had led yoga and Tai Chi activities and joined the HiiKo Drum Group in the performance. Chinese percussionist Xu Yang was among those who criticized the choice of instrument, saying it was inappropriate at a site with strong national symbolism. Lululemon said it had removed all related promotional material.
