Liverpool oust Chelsea on penalties to reach quarterfinals

The Reds won 6-5 in the shootout after a 1-1 draw, with Wesley Fofana's miss proving decisive.

Liverpool advanced to the Carabao Cup 2026/27 quarterfinals after eliminating Chelsea 6-5 on penalties at Anfield, following a 1-1 draw in normal time. Chelsea took the lead first through a penalty from Morgan Rogers after Ryan Gravenberch fouled Moises Caicedo in the box. Liverpool levelled three minutes later, also from the spot, when Cody Gakpo converted after a handball by Wesley Fofana. In the second half, both sides created chances, but Giorgi Mamardashvili and Mike Penders kept the score level. The tie went to penalties, and Fofana's attempt sailing over the crossbar sent Liverpool into the last eight.
