Liverpool hold Newcastle 2-2 on Szoboszlai penalty

Liverpool came from behind twice at St James' Park before equalizing in injury time in the 2026/27 Premier League opener.

Liverpool opened the 2026/27 Premier League with a 2-2 draw away to Newcastle United at St James' Park on Sunday (23/8), after a stoppage-time penalty from Dominik Szoboszlai denied the hosts victory. Newcastle went ahead in the fifth minute through Anthony Elanga after receiving a pass from Osula. Liverpool leveled in the 55th minute through a Cody Gakpo shot from outside the penalty area, but Joe Willock restored Newcastle's lead two minutes later. Newcastle nearly added another in the 85th minute when Yoane Wissa went one-on-one with Alisson Becker, but the chance was denied. Liverpool's late pressure then produced a penalty after Victor Munoz was fouled in the box, and Szoboszlai converted it for the final goal.
