Lee Biscuits to close Johor factory after 92 years, cutting 300 jobs
Why it matters: The Marie biscuits maker is exiting snack production as its parent group shifts capital toward rubber and palm oil.
Lee Biscuits will shut its factory in Pontian, Johor, by the end of October, ending 92 years of production for the maker of Marie biscuits and other longtime snack brands. The closure is part of a restructuring by its parent group, which is leaving snack manufacturing to consolidate assets and focus on core businesses including rubber and palm oil. Suppliers and customers were notified last month that production would stop, and about 300 employees are expected to remain through the end of October mainly for cleanup and related work. The company has already sold out its biscuit inventory through warehouse clearance sales. Its website and social media pages were no longer accessible on Friday.
