Suspected World War II bomb blast in Biak kills 5

Polda Papua sent 16 Jibom personnel to the site after the Fishermen Complex blast was not yet confirmed safe.

An explosion believed to have come from a leftover World War II bomb killed five people at the Fishermen Complex on Jalan Walter Mongonsidi, Kampung Yenures, Biak Kota District, Biak Numfor Regency, Papua, on Sunday (31/5) at about 14:45 WIT. Police also initially reported that three people were still missing, while at least four houses were badly damaged. Polda Papua then deployed a bomb disposal team from Satuan Brimob led by AKP Hanasbey and made up of 16 personnel on Monday (1/6). Biak Numfor Police Chief Ari Trestiawan said the area had been sealed off and residents were told to stay away because other bombs could still be present. Polda Papua Brimob unit chief Adarma Sinaga said the Jibom team would investigate whether any explosive material remained at the site.
