Latino voters drove Democrats' Texas sweep and border-district wins
Why it matters: Democrats carried every U.S. House district along the Mexico border for the first time since 2008.
Latino voters swung sharply toward Democrats in the midterm elections, helping power a statewide sweep in Texas and victories in battleground House races across the country. AP voter surveys found about one-third of Hispanic voters backed the Republican in their local House race, down from roughly 4 in 10 who supported Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election. In Texas, the shift helped Democrats flip a Senate seat, the governor's office and every statewide office on the ballot. Roughly 7 in 10 Hispanic voters supported James Talarico in the Senate race, while about 3 in 10 backed Ken Paxton. Democrats also won every House district touching the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California for the first time since 2008.
