Lake above Nepal-Tibet flood zone threatens second surge

A debris-dammed lake above the Nepal-Tibet border flood zone posed a renewed threat Friday after Chinese authorities warned it could overflow or breach and send another surge downstream. State media said about 2.5 million cubic meters of water had already collected, with roughly 3 million more expected to flow in between Thursday and the weekend. The lake formed after a collapse near Langtang Lirung sent bedrock, glacier ice and debris into the river system that triggered Wednesday's deadly flooding. Satellite analysts said clearer images showed not just glacier failure but a much larger mountainside collapse. Rescue work near Gyirong Port was briefly halted as the lake overflowed, then resumed later after officials said the immediate risk had come under control.
