Kyle Kirkwood wins DC's first IndyCar street race at Freedom 250

What's new: Kirkwood led 128 of 147 laps as tens of thousands lined the National Mall for the two-day event.

Kyle Kirkwood won the Freedom 250 on Sunday in the first IndyCar street race held in Washington, D.C., finishing atop the podium after dominating much of the event. The Florida native led 128 of the race's 147 laps on a downtown course that ran along Pennsylvania, Constitution and Independence avenues near the National Mall. President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump opened the race by taking a ceremonial lap in the presidential limousine, and Trump then waved the green flag. The event drew tens of thousands of spectators and was staged as part of the yearlong celebration of the 250th anniversary of American independence.
