Kyle Kirkwood wins D.C.'s first IndyCar street race as Trump starts event

Kyle Kirkwood won the Freedom 250 Grand Prix on Sunday, taking the first IndyCar street race ever held in Washington after leading 128 of 147 laps. The downtown course ran 1.7 miles around the National Mall, sending cars past Pennsylvania Avenue, the Washington Monument and the U.S. Capitol at speeds nearing 190 mph. President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump opened the event with a ceremonial lap in the presidential limousine, and Trump waved the green flag at the start. Organizers said roughly 140,000 people were expected over the weekend. The race brought major road closures, security restrictions and a temporary airspace shutdown for military and Air Force One flyovers.
