USS Abraham Lincoln crew mental health crisis sparks alarm in US
Family members and members of Congress warn some sailors tried to jump overboard after 250-263 days at sea without a port call.
Concerns over the mental health of the USS Abraham Lincoln crew have grown after military families and U.S. members of Congress warned of a crisis on the aircraft carrier. Reports from Navy Times and Stars and Stripes said some sailors tried to jump into the Arabian Sea during an extended combat deployment tied to the war against Iran. More than 5,000 sailors and Marines were said to have entered their ninth month at sea, with 250 to 263 straight days without a stop on land. Families voiced their protest at an emotional meeting in San Diego with Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao. They also pointed to conditions on the ship, including broken toilets and moldy walls, as well as desperate messages from crew members who said they hoped not to wake up the next day.
