KMP Mutiara Sentosa 2 Catches Fire off Sumenep, 250 Evacuated

Nine vessels were dispatched to a point 19 nautical miles north of Pulau Sapudi after contact with the captain was briefly lost.

KMP Mutiara Sentosa 2 caught fire in waters north of Sumenep, Madura, while sailing from Surabaya to Makassar on Sunday morning. The ship carried about 250 passengers and crew, who were evacuated after the blaze grew. Surabaya SAR office received the initial report from Syahbandar Tanjung Perak at 08.24 WIB, and the operator, PT Atosim Lampung Pelayaran, confirmed the incident a minute later. The vessel was reported about 19 nautical miles north of Pulau Sapudi. Several passengers jumped into the sea as conditions worsened, and they were picked up by TB Hasnur 26 and the British Mentor. Police said a total of nine vessels were deployed in the rescue operation, including KN SAR 249 Permadi, SAR elements from Sumenep, and ships from KSOP and SROP Kalianget.
