KM Nurul Salsa sinks off Selayar, 18 still missing

Search-and-rescue teams are still looking for 18 people after KM Nurul Salsa sank in waters west of Pulau Polassi in Kabupaten Kepulauan Selayar, South Sulawesi. Basarnas Makassar said the latest verification found 78 people aboard the vessel, more than the original manifest that listed only 50 passengers. By Sunday, 59 people had been found alive and one person had died. The two latest survivors, a man and a woman, were found on a small uninhabited island after surviving on an emergency raft. Earlier, five other survivors, including a seven-year-old girl, were rescued by fishermen after drifting at sea for three days. The search operation involves five large vessels, surveillance aircraft and a helicopter. Muhammad Arif Anwar said the search would continue while authorities pursue the possibility that other victims were carried away by the current.
