KLH Pushes Climate Justice Law as RI Waste Hits 51 Million Tons
The government is drafting new legal protections as 74% of waste remains unmanaged and landfills keep releasing methane.
The Ministry of Environment/Environmental Control Agency is preparing a draft Climate Justice Law amid a national waste crisis that reaches 51 million tons per year. At the peak of World Environment Day 2026 in the Cibubur Campground, Jakarta, on Saturday, Environment Minister Jumhur Hidayat said 74% of waste has not been optimally managed and most still piles up at landfills with open dumping practices. The situation triggers methane emissions, which are said to be 30 times more dangerous than carbon dioxide. KLH is preparing two legal options: a separate law or a new chapter in Law Number 32 Year 2009. The government also wants to regulate carbon trading so the biggest benefits go to local communities, not speculators.
