Kim pushes North Korean nuclear production, new underwater weapons
Kim wants the navy folded into nuclear deterrence, with Kang Kon and Choe Hyon moved into service faster.
Kim Jong Un is pressing to accelerate North Korea's strategic weapons buildup, from nuclear material production to the development of new underwater weapons. In a KCNA report cited by media on 3-4 June, Kim vowed to increase military nuclear capabilities exponentially while inspecting a nuclear material production facility. Separately, he reviewed sea trials of the destroyer Kang Kon and ordered testing completed so Kang Kon and Choe Hyon can be handed over to the navy soon. Kim also said the navy must become a reliable part of the nuclear deterrence system and be able to strike enemies from below and above the sea surface. Pyongyang has long viewed its nuclear arsenal as protection against the United States and South Korea.
