Kidnapped Singaporean, 72, rescued in Kedah after S$1 million demand
What's new: Malaysian police linked the syndicate to earlier Kuala Lumpur kidnappings and arrested six suspects after the rescue.
A 72-year-old Singaporean man was rescued in Kedah after kidnappers in Malaysia demanded S$1 million from his family, Singapore and Malaysian police said. The man had traveled alone to Malaysia on July 26. His family alerted the Singapore Police Force on Aug. 4 after receiving information that he had been abducted and after a ransom demand was made. Malaysian police mounted operations that led to his rescue on Friday. Reports cited by local media said he had been lured by a supposed consulting job, and that his family made three payments totaling about RM48,000. Police found him tied up, blindfolded and injured in a house in Alor Setar. Two suspected syndicate members were killed in a shootout, and six more people were arrested.
