Kherson ceasefire widens as aid convoy, Oleshky evacuation near

What's next: Humanitarian deliveries are due before Friday evacuations for roughly 1,700 to 2,000 people still trapped in Oleshky.

A ceasefire that began around the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky has been extended across Ukraine's southern Kherson region, opening a rare pause in shelling and drone attacks after years of fighting. Ukrainian officials and the Kremlin said the truce was holding, with no reported breaches since it took effect early Tuesday. The pause is intended to let food and medicine reach Oleshky before planned evacuations on Friday. Officials estimate about 1,700 to 2,000 people remain in the city, with several thousand more in nearby areas. Oleshky has lacked electricity, gas and water since the Kakhovka Dam blast in 2023, and residents told the BBC they had resorted to cooking garden weeds to survive.
