Kenya police arrest ex-chief justice at Nairobi park protest

What's new: David Maraga was released but stayed at the police station as activists challenged plans for a 1,300-vehicle car park.

Kenyan police fired tear gas and arrested former Chief Justice David Maraga and at least nine other protesters during a demonstration near Nairobi National Park on Monday. Activists were opposing plans they say would carve protected land from the reserve for an expanded animal orphanage and a parking area for 1,300 vehicles. The Kenya Wildlife Service defended the orphanage project, saying it would improve animal welfare, veterinary training and visitor experience, and that the site would cover 89 acres, or 0.31% of the park. Maraga, who hopes to run for president in 2027, was later released but refused to leave the police station until the other detainees were freed. Rights and environmental groups condemned the crackdown on what they called a peaceful protest.
