Kenya halts US-backed Ebola quarantine site after court rebuke

Kenya's health minister, Aden Duale, halted construction of a US-backed Ebola quarantine facility at Laikipia Air Base after a High Court judge found him in contempt for letting work continue despite an earlier stop order. Duale appeared in court in Nairobi on Tuesday, apologized and said he had ordered an immediate end to construction and site preparation. Judge Patricia Nyaundi accepted the apology and released him with a warning. The 50-bed center in Nanyuki was meant to receive US citizens suspected of contracting Ebola during the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The court injunction remains in place pending a July 23 hearing. The project has triggered protests in Nanyuki, where at least two people were killed during demonstrations.
