Kennedy Center board seeks stay to keep Trump name on facade
What's next: A judge ordered Trump's name removed by Friday and barred a planned two-year shutdown for renovations.
The Kennedy Center's Trump-backed board moved Thursday to delay a court order requiring the performing arts venue to remove President Donald Trump's name from the building by Friday. A formal request for a stay was filed after U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ruled May 29 that only Congress can change the center's name. Cooper also blocked the administration from shutting the Washington venue for major renovations that were scheduled to begin in July and last two years. The center had already begun reverting to its legal name in staff guidance, on its website and in recent marketing for the June 28 Mark Twain Prize event. Rep. Joyce Beatty, an ex officio board member, brought the lawsuit challenging the renaming.
