Kennedy Center board backs 2-year closure for renovations

What's next: A federal judge who blocked an earlier shutdown in May could face new legal challenges over the revised plan.

The Kennedy Center's board voted Thursday to proceed with a two-year closure of the Washington performing arts complex for major renovations, according to two people familiar with the matter. Board member Paolo Zampolli confirmed the vote to PBS News. Management had presented options ranging from a full shutdown to a narrower series of phased closures, with some outdoor events at the Reach potentially continuing. U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper blocked an earlier closure in May, ruling the board's March 16 vote appeared "ill-informed and seemingly preordained." The latest move comes after President Donald Trump replaced the institution's leadership in early 2025 and was later named chairman by a reshaped board.
