Kemenhut sets forest carbon trade rules, maps 6.28 million ha

Permenhut 6/2026 will be used for forestry emissions offsets, while 6.28 million ha of social forests are readied for foreign buyers.

Kementerian Kehutanan has issued Peraturan Menteri Kehutanan Number 6 Tahun 2026, which sets procedures for carbon trading through greenhouse gas emissions offsets in the forestry sector. The regulation is designed to provide legal certainty, strengthen governance, and preserve the credibility of Indonesia's carbon market so it stays aligned with sustainable forest management. At the same time, the government has mapped 6.28 million hectares of social forest for carbon trading involving buyers from abroad. The scheme is aimed at helping meet the FOLU Net Sink 2030 target. Kemenhut stressed that carbon credits from the forest sector must have high integrity, with additional requirements for environmental benefits, community involvement, fair benefit sharing, and protection of biodiversity.
